M-reno – Cutting in the Cooktop

I’ve got the sparky coming around tomorrow to put the appliances into my kitchen.  So it was about time to cut a dirty great hole into my benchtop in order to slot the new cooktop in place.  I’m adding Westinghouse appliances into this reno, not the best quality stuff, but not junk either.  I’ve gone with decent sizes at least (900mm), to add that bit of pizazz when it comes time to sell.  So seeing I couldn’t delay it any longer, it was time to cut up my nice new benches.

I marked it all out in texta first.  Then remeasured about ten times to make sure the hole was correct, and that it was the right distance away from everything that it needed to be away from.  Then I measured again.  The last thing I wanted to do at this point was cut the benches incorrectly!

It doesn’t seem to matter how many times you measure or how assured you are that the lines are in the right spot, I think that first drill-hole is always nerve racking!  Still, it was too late to turn back now!

So after creating much noise, and even more sawdust, there was now a hole where there wasn’t before.  Just a little final shaping required and some neatening in the corners, some cleaning up of sawdust, then…

The fit test.  And no matter how many times you measured before you cut, you always seem to hold your breath as you go to place the cooktop into place too.  This time I was met with success.  Phew!

And so there you have it!  The sparky will wire it in for me tomorrow, and place the oven in the front.  Then I might finally be able to start doing my fair share of the cooking (I’ve been looked after very well in the last little while!)

And sorry about the poor quality of these pics too – my camera is in for repairs at the moment and my phone is far from brilliant!
